2024 Adult Learn to Race Dates

Session One: June 9th, June 15th, July 7th, 
July 14th - 3:00-5:30pm, June 30th - 5:30-8:00pm

Session Two: August 4th, 3:00 to 5:30 PM, August 11th, 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM,
August 18th, 3:00 to 5:30 PM, September 5th, 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM,
and September 8th, 3:00 to 5:30 PM

 

 $600 per person includes: learning materials and boat charter and insurance fees. BYC membership NOT required.
*Class limited to four (4) Students per boat.
*You will need to bring a life jacket, light soled shoes or non-marking shoes.
*Students should be physically capable to participate safely during instruction and pre and post instruction while utilizing club boats.

Adult Learn to Race topics include:
  • Sail trim and boat handling, boat speed, powering and depowering the sail plan, 
  • Starting line tactics, mark roundings
  • Asymmetrical spinnaker skills, course tactics, course strategy and a practical application of the racing rules 
  • Crew communication, crew organization and efficient team work. 
  • This hands-on ALTR course culminates with your own ALTR class regatta. 
  • Crew placement may be available post-course for students upon successful completion of ALTR course depending on boat availability. 
  • Also covered- parts of the boat, rigging, points of sail, observing conditions
The session breakdown time-wise: Approximately 25 minutes classroom chalk talks, 1.5 hours on the water, and post 25 minutes chalk talk. Most of the time is psent on the Detroit River in sight of the Club.

Head Instructor: James Cooper has 55 years of racing experience, US Sail Level One Instructor certification. USCG-Licensed Captain. 25 years of coaching and instructional experience. 30 years HS teaching experience. Sailboat owner and competitive sailor, multiple accolades, including BYC/MAC awards and flags.

While enrolled in class, students will have a guest membership at Bayview allowing them access to the dining room and bar. All charges incurrred must be paid by credit card at the time of service.

Students are also encouraged to participate in the Hitchhiker Thursday program which is a highly successful effort to connect non-members with boats in Bayview's Thursday Night Off-the-Dock race.
