Representing Bayview on the World Stage

Two Bayview Yacht Club members plan to skipper their boats in the 2027 Admiral’s Cup, proudly representing their home club in Detroit at one of yacht racing’s premier global events.

Team Bayview Yacht Club will pair Peter Askew’s TP52 Wizard with James Murray’s Carkeek Fast 40+ Callisto. Long regarded as the World Cup of offshore yacht racing, the Admiral’s Cup series is sailed in European waters with boats representing countries and individual yacht clubs.

Bayview Commodore Sandra Svoboda made the announcement with Askew and Murray, Michigan natives who grew up sailing on the Great Lakes. The skippers shared their team’s plans to campaign under the BYC burgee in Europe, the Caribbean, and the United States over the next year in preparation for the Admiral’s Cup in July 2027.

Peter Askew

TP52 Wizard

Peter Askew grew up racing Flying Juniors at Bayview and found his way onto several member-owned boats such as Boomerang, Stars & Stripes, Leading Edge, Renegade and Stripes, where he was boat captain for two seasons.

After raising a family and a 33-year career in business, Peter, along with brother David, have successfully campaigned their R/P 74 Wizard, winning such events as the Key West Race, where they set the course record in 2016.

With their Volvo Open 70, they embarked upon an offshore campaign winning the Rolex Sydney Hobart Race, Bermuda Race, Caribbean 600, Transatlantic Race and the Rolex Fastnet Race, the first American boat to do so in 30 years.

Peter has also won the 2019 Atlantic Offshore Series, the RORC Somerset Trophy, Bayview’s Jeffries Trophy, New York Yacht Club’s Muschbacher Trophy and was a finalist for the 2019 Rolex Yachtsman of the Year. In 2022 Peter acquired the current Wizard, a 2017 Botin IRC52.

James Murray

Carkeek Fast 40+ Callisto

James Murray grew up in Grosse Pointe Woods where he was a junior sailor at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club and a graduate of Grosse Pointe North High School. A college sailor at Harvard, Jim got back into competitive sailing when his young family settled in Lake Bluff, Illinois, in 2009.

Callisto Racing has since logged wins aboard their TP52 in the Newport–Bermuda, Sydney Hobart, Pineapple Cup, Nassau Cup, Spinnaker Cup, and Wirth Munroe races.

Team Callisto has won three Great Lakes J/109 titles, three Verve Cups, and the J/70 US National Championship. Sailing for the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron aboard their Botin 42 at the 2025 Admiral’s Cup, Callisto came second on total points in the 30-boat fleet and won the RORC Channel Race overall.

Callisto will debut their Carkeek Fast 40+ at the 200th Annual Cowes Week regatta next month.

The Event

About the Admiral’s Cup

The Admiral’s Cup, which returned in the summer of 2025 after a 20-year hiatus, is organized by the Royal Ocean Racing Club.

Held in Cowes on the Isle of Wight in southern England, this legendary event brings together a large field of two-boat teams representing the leading yacht clubs of the world.

The event combines the 100-year-old RORC Channel Race from Cowes to Le Havre, France, three days of inshore racing in the Solent, and the legendary Rolex Fastnet Race in a test of seamanship, versatility, and endurance.

The team with the lowest combined score across all three components will hoist the Admiral’s Cup in Cherbourg, France, after the Fastnet finish.

Both skippers, members of Bayview Yacht Club, have assembled veteran squads featuring some of the world’s most decorated offshore racers for the Admiral’s Cup challenge.

The Bayview Admiral’s Cup team plans appearances in Detroit in the lead up to next July. The squad hopes to share their campaign plans and passion for offshore sailing with audiences of experienced and up-and-coming sailors, including youth and high school athletes, at yacht clubs and sailing centers.
